PinnacleSports.com Lists Sorenstam as Underdog
WILLEMSTAD, Curacao – (PRESS RELEASE) -- Now that Tiger Woods' quest fell short at last week's U.S. Open at Pinehurst Number 2, Annika Sorenstam is the only golfer in the world with a chance at a Grand Slam in 2005. As she sets to tee it up at this week's U.S. Women's Open at Cherry Hills, Sorenstam is halfway to becoming the first golfer in history to capture all four major professional championships in the same year. Although she's an overwhelming favorite to capture her third U.S. Open title, online bookmaker PinnacleSports.com still lists Annika Sorenstam as an underdog to complete the Grand Slam this year.
The Internet's largest sports betting site, PinnacleSports.com currently lists Sorenstam as a 6/5 favorite to win her third major this year at the U.S. Women's Open, which would put her just one championship short of the Grand Slam. Although she'll likely be the favorite at July's Weetabix Women's British Open, PinnacleSports.com has made Sorenstam an 11/4 long shot to become the first Grand Slam winner in golf history. The oddsmakers believe the more likely result is that the best female golfer on the planet will not complete the Slam this year, which PinnacleSports.com lists as a 1/3 favorite.
"With six victories in eight starts this year, including the first two majors on the LPGA Tour, you'd think that Annika has the Slam in her and would be favored to achieve what Tiger Woods could not in 2005," said Simon Noble of PinnacleSports.com. "Although she's undoubtedly the best golfer in the LPGA and is the clear favorite to win every tournament she enters, we feel history is against Sorenstam winning all four majors this year."
