Opponents Target Seneca Casino Site
BUFFALO, New York – As reported by the Buffalo News: "The Seneca Nation of Indians is still days, if not weeks, from announcing its choice of the site for a Buffalo casino, but that is not preventing opponents of casino gambling from launching pre-emptive strikes.
"Citizens Against Casino Gambling in Erie County announced plans to file a lawsuit seeking an environmental-impact statement prior to the opening of a casino in the city.
"…The group has hired attorney Richard J. Lippes to take legal action on its behalf. A full-blown environmental study would potentially delay any casino development by a year or more, preventing the Senecas from opening a Buffalo gaming venue within a state-prescribed timetable.
"A similar lawsuit brought against the Senecas' earlier proposal to locate a casino near Buffalo Niagara International Airport in Cheektowaga resulted in an affirmative ruling from State Supreme Court Justice Joseph G. Makowski in the spring.
"While Citizens Against Casino Gambling is threatening to block the expected city casino on environmental grounds, it makes no attempt to hide its universal 'no gaming' stance…"
