Ontario Lottery Terminals to Issue Amber Alerts

4 Apr 2005

ONTARIO, Canada -- As reported by the Globe and Mail: "The Ontario Government unveiled plans Monday to expand the Amber Alert warning system about an abducted child to the province's 9,000 lottery terminals.

"Under the program, the public is notified that a child has been abducted through information posted on electronic highway signs and broadcast on radio and television. Beginning Monday, the information will also be displayed on lottery screens in high-traffic locations such as convenience stores, gas stations and supermarkets to help spread the word about an abducted child.

"'There's no greater fear than the fear of losing a child," Premier Dalton McGuinty said in making the announcement. 'Any way we can help to better protect our kids will make a difference.'

"...Joseph Cordiano, Minister of Economic Development and Trade, said expanding the program to lottery terminals means there will be 9,000 more chances members of the public will find out about an abducted child.

"...When an Amber Alert is issued, marketing messages that normally appear on lottery screens will be replaced with the following bulletin: 'Your help is needed. See important information below. A child has been abducted.'..."
