New Seneca Leadership will Face Casino Issue

6 Oct 2004

NEW YORK – As reported by the Buffalo Business First: "The Seneca Nation of Indians will elect a new president later this fall, but its feelings about putting a casino in downtown Buffalo remain the same.

"…'The City of Buffalo has to change its attitude,' said Barry Snyder Sr., likely successor to outgoing President Rickey Armstrong Sr. 'They took our compact and misinterpreted it.'

"…As current head of the Seneca Nation Tribal Council, Snyder has already played a key role in the development of two casinos, the Seneca Niagara Casino in Niagara Falls and Seneca Allegany Casino in Salamanca. Both are part of the compact negotiated three years ago between the Seneca Nation and Gov. George Pataki.

"The compact called for three local casinos, including one in Buffalo, but when development talks stalled in the summer of 2003, the Seneca Nation announced plans to shift the casino to Cheektowaga. That action led to strained relations between the Indian nation and Buffalo officials culminating in a lawsuit that upheld Buffalo's contention that the casino had to be built in the city and not a suburban location.

"…Buffalo Mayor Anthony Masiello said he hopes to contact Snyder within the next few days.

"…Where the Senecas place the casino has the potential to be a windfall for the winning community…"
