New Probe into 'Fix' Claims

23 Jun 2005

LONDON, UK -- As reported by the Guardian: "Just as the feelgood factor was returning, following Motivator's sparkling Derby triumph and a largely enjoyable Royal Ascot at York meeting, racing was rocked by fresh allegations of corruption and race-fixing yesterday.

"Paul Scotney, director of security at the Jockey Club, confirmed to the Guardian that a new investigation is on-going, independent of the City of London police inquiry into alleged race-fixing which has led to 26 arrests.

"Commenting on claims in yesterday's Racing Post that a "gambling ring" may be fixing races on a regular basis, Scotney said: "There is an investigation and we are dealing with it. Top professionals at the Jockey Club are involved. If criminal action is found, then we would discuss matters with the police.

"'Nothing has been uncovered as yet. Certain individuals have been questioned,' added Scotney. 'But there is no evidence to suggest they have done anything wrong. However, we did have concerns over a number of accounts following dialogue between our betting experts and Betfair (the betting exchange).'

"...The Racing Post described four races which the paper believes to have been affected by corruption, but gave no names and kept the details so vague that the jockeys involved could not be identified..."
