New Hampshire lottery pushes for expansion

28 Mar 2008

NEW HAMPSHIRE -- As reported by the Concord Monitor: "The New Hampshire Lottery Commission yesterday made the case for expanding gambling in the state, saying that new games must be offered if the lottery is going to meet revenue targets set by Gov. John Lynch.

"The commission didn't back any particular form of gambling in a press release, but it listed a range adopted in other New England states, including Connecticut's casinos, Maine's 'racinos' - slot machines at racetracks - and Rhode Island's Keno, a fast-paced game with elements of bingo and lottery. New Hampshire established the nation's first lottery, commissioners wrote, but other states have pushed ahead.

"...Yesterday's announcement comes as the state Senate debates a bill that would create racinos and allow video lottery machines at grand hotels in Coos County. The measure was tabled last week, and sponsor Sen. Lou D'Allesandro says he's still working to gather votes. Yesterday, D'Allesandro said the commission's announcement would bolster his case.

"...Lottery Commission Chairman Richard Campbell said that commissioners were aware of the Senate debate, but their announcement was spurred by disappointing Powerball sales that nearly guarantee their revenue will fall short for the year..."
