Mohegan Tribe, Montville Work Through Issues
CONNECTICUT – As reported by Norwich Bulletin: "Taking land off town tax rolls, opening the second-largest casino in the world in the middle of Uncasville and increasing traffic in the region could strain relations between any town and an Indian tribe.
"But the Mohegan tribe and the town of Montville have kept problems to a minimum.
"…Tribal leaders said that's how they've always done business, whether it's with the towns, the state or any other entity.
"…The tribe has helped with several projects that have benefited the town, including the Thames River water pipeline, which pipes water from Groton and across the Thames River into Montville. The tribe is picking up the bulk of the cost for the line, which supplies most of the town's water.
"…By contrast, the Mashantucket Pequot Tribe, which is surrounded by Ledyard, North Stonington and Preston, has been entangled in numerous legal battles with those towns since Foxwoods opened in 1992…"
