Mississippi senate limits slots
"Senate Bill 2199, drawn up by Republicans from areas that don't have casinos, passed in a 36-14 vote. The measure would prohibit counties that haven't voted to allow gambling to approve it in the future. The Legislature would still have no authority over American Indian gambling operations because those groups operate as sovereign nations and aren't subject to state law.
"Sen. Tommy Gollott, R-Biloxi, one of the architects of the bill that allowed offshore gambling in Mississippi, was among those who spoke out against the bill.
"...The state's casinos are doing well and part of the reason is the competition that is allowed under the current laws, he said. Gollott joined Democrats who said the bill would take away some counties' economic development rights..."
