Minnesota Gov. vetoes lawful gambling bill

ST. PAUL, Minnesota -- Governor Mark Dayton has vetoed Chapter 303, Senate File 2642 the lawful gambling bill that would have seen online scratch tickets banned and the lottery unable to offer casino games, according to a statement on his website.

A description of the bill is as follows:

Chapter 303, SF 2642: This lawful gambling bill modifies games, prizes, and other provisions to regulate charitable gambling. The bill prohibits the director of the state lottery from offering casino-style games and suspends the sale of certain lottery tickets through a Web site or self-service devices. This passed the House 126-2 and the Senate 56-5.

In his veto letter the Governor described the internet as an increasingly common way that the public accesses services and cited the provisions added to the bill that limited lottery ticket sales as problematic. He also pointed out that it was the people of Minnesota who originally voted to authorize the state lottery.
