Merrill Weighs Singapore License Applicants

SINGAPORE – As reported by Bloomberg: "Las Vegas Sands, MGM Mirage and Harrah's Entertainment are 'well placed' to win the rights to build a resort that will host Singapore's first casino, Merrill Lynch said in a report analyzing their proposals.

"The three Las Vegas-based companies are among 11 groups seeking to offer gambling in the city, which this year lifted its ban on casinos to expand tourism.

"…'We believe these companies have the experience in dealing with the Asian market, including premium play, and we expect these companies to bid aggressively,' Sean Monaghan, a Merrill Lynch analyst who tracks the gambling industry, said in the report, which was released late Wednesday.

"…Merrill Lynch estimates that the central casino-resort could draw $3 billion in investment, and that the Sentosa site could fetch a further $2 billion. Based on the government's gambling-area limit of 15,000 square meters, or 161,400 square feet, the casino would be big enough to operate about 1,500 slot machines and more than 300 gambling tables, according to Merrill Lynch…"
