Match-fixing dogs European football even after arrests

31 Mar 2010

LONDON, England -- Can authorities get a handle on the increasing problems with match-fixing in European football is the question a recent BBC World Service radio program examined.

The BBC World Service report highlights the investigation in 2009 which involved telephone taps.

These telephone taps revealed the astonishing extent fixers were willing to consider, such as drugging players, in efforts to fix as many as 200 football matches.

Another alarming insight the radio program exposes and catalogues is how match-fixers targeted weak and vulnerable players.

The World Service report ultimately concludes that while some inroads have been made, match-fixers are still out there.
