Massachusetts dog tracks look to slots
BOSTON, Massachusetts -- As reported by the Boston Herald: "The fight to ban greyhound racing is over, replaced by the battle to bring slot machines to the dog tracks.
"...One day after voters approved a ballot initiative prohibiting greyhound dog racing in 2010, track owners are hoping the Legislature will approve slot machines at the state's two facilities and spare 1,000 jobs.
"In March, Gov. Deval Patrick's plan to license three casinos in Massachusetts was defeated with help from House Speaker Salvatore DiMasi.
"But House Ways and Means Chairman Robert DeLeo said the state's fiscal crisis, which required cutting nearly $1 billion in spending, could sway gambling skeptics on Beacon Hill to support slot machines at Wonderland and Raynham Park..."
