Maine slot ban petition falls short
AUGUSTA, Maine – As reported by the Portland Press Herald: "Supporters of a proposal to ban slot machines in Maine said on Monday that they have failed to collect enough signatures to force a vote on the issue this year.
"A spokesman for No Slots for ME!, the group that is promoting a referendum to outlaw slots, said organizers will not meet the state's deadline Thursday for submitting petitions to the Secretary of State's Office. Doug Muir said the group now hopes to put the issue on the ballot in November 2008.
"…The campaign was designed to prevent the future operation of slot machines in Maine and to outlaw their use at Hollywood Slots in Bangor, the only legal slot machine parlor in Maine.
"The push to outlaw slot machines was one of several competing referendums that supporters and opponents of gambling had hoped to get on the ballot this November.
"Now, only one is scheduled to go the voters on Nov. 6…"
