Lotto ads not welcome on campus
9 Jul 2007
CHAPEL HILL, North Carolina -- As reported by the Wilmington Star: "The president of the University of North Carolina says state campuses shouldn't allow ads for the state lottery at sporting events because they encourage gambling.
"The contracts between the lottery and the universities expired last week. UNC President Erskine Bowles asked chancellors not to renew contracts.
"...Lottery spokeswoman Alice Garland said lottery officials were puzzled by Bowles' action.
"'We think it's a good venue,' she said. 'We think college alumni - that's a good audience. I think it's a bigger loss for the universities because it was a good source of revenue.'..."
