Lottery officials balk at ruling

SACRAMENTO, California -- As reported by the Alameda Times Star: "Lottery officials Friday asked a judge to drop his court order to make multistate Mega Millions more fair to California by increasing the length of time gamblers have to claim prizes.

"If the judge is unwilling to drop his year-old order, the state lottery wants another four months to work on legislation linked to prize-claim inequities with other states.

"The judge did not immediately respond. A group opposed to expanded gambling said it may pursue a judgment holding the lottery in contempt of court.

"...The lottery said it had tried matching prize-claim deadlines between California and 11 other states by pushing California legislation that stalled, unsuccessfully asking other states to change Mega Millions rules, and considering various forms of insurance that were deemed too costly..."
