MELBOURNE, Australia -- As reported by the Age: "Technology is playing a huge role in the way organised crime is developing throughout the world and law enforcers struggle to keep up.

"Traditional forms of organised crime - such as gambling, street prostitution and handling of stolen property - had progressed to internet gambling, internet prostitution and theft of intellectual property.

"Researcher Jay Albanese told an organised crime conference in Melbourne yesterday that as long as demand existed, criminal syndicates would find ways to meet the continuing needs.

"'The demand is still there for the gambling, for the sex and for the money, but with technology changes around the world, criminal groups have found alternative ways to cater for the existing demand. Organised crime used to be a local issue, city by city, a state-by-state problem, and some places had it, and others didn't.

"'But now it almost doesn't matter what jurisdiction it is - legal or illegal - because, for instance, now you can go on the internet and bet on any kind of game you want.'..."
