Kentucky Derby logo revealed

5 Nov 2007

LOUISVILLE, Kentucky -- (PRESS RELEASE) -- Officials at Churchill Downs today unveiled the official event logo for the 134th edition of the world-famous Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (Grade I), which is scheduled for Saturday, May 3, 2008, at the legendary racetrack in Louisville, Ky. The logo unveiling marked the official kick-off to Churchill Downs' "Halfway to Derby" party, which will take place on Saturday, Nov. 3. Churchill Downs is starting the six-month countdown to the 2008 Kentucky Derby with a variety of special on-track promotions, including live music and a hat contest.

The official Kentucky Derby 134 event logo was designed by artists for The Game, a sports merchandising company that produces officially licensed Kentucky Derby and Kentucky Oaks apparel, gift items and collectibles and has previously worked with Churchill Downs and the racetrack's licensing agency, IMG Worldwide, to develop a variety of Kentucky Derby-branded products.

The official event logo for Kentucky Derby 134 features a Thoroughbred racehorse and jockey, outlined in vibrant springtime shades of pink, orange and red, set against a deep blue background that includes a stylized version of Churchill Downs' famed Twin Spires, the same symbols now used as the corporate trademark of Churchill Downs and its parent company, Churchill Downs Incorporated. The racehorse's saddle towel bears the number "134," to commemorate the 134th running of the "Greatest Two Minutes in Sports."

"The Kentucky Derby is all about color, energy, and an enthusiastic celebration of one of our nation's most respected and beloved sporting events," said Churchill Downs President Steve Sexton. "We believe the 2008 Kentucky Derby logo conveys those qualities in a bright, distinguishing manner that will excite and energize Derby fans already looking forward to another Kentucky Derby weekend in May 2008."

Churchill Downs utilized consumer focus groups during the logo selection process and incorporated customers' feedback in the final design. The event logo will adorn all officially licensed merchandise and a variety of products and promotional materials associated with Kentucky Derby 134.
