Keep It Low at Craps
Every game in the casino has a good way to play it and a bad way to play it. If you take the game of craps, for instance, you have many awful bets and a few good bets and it is up to the players to determine what a good bet is and what a bad bet is.
Most don’t have any idea of what a good bet is and what a bad bet is – or they wouldn’t make the bad bets.
Sadly, most players mix up some good bets with some awful bets and that is the total edge they give the house. That total edge, roll in and roll out, can be frighteningly high and this will cause the crap player little chance to be ahead during any length of time.
Let’s take a look at some of the good bets first. These would be the Pass Line (or Come) bet, with odds, and the Placing of the six or eight in multiples of six dollars for each placement.
These are decent bets – for sure. The house edge on the Pass Line (or Come bet) is a mere 1.41 percent. That is a loss of just $1.41 per $100 wagered.
As many of you know, when that bet is established on a number you can place a bet called “the odds” and add an amount (usually double, triple or more) to your Pass Line wager. This new bet has no house edge attached to it. Yes, in many ways it is a free bet.
Now, there is a way to make this bet pay more than you realize. Watch this.
The table minimum is $10 but you like to bet more than $10. You like to bet, oh maybe, $20 on the Pass Line. Now, once up on a number you like to put $40 in odds on your Pass Line bet. You have $60 riding on the next roll of the dice. Your expectation is to lose $2.82 on that bet.
Why lose so much? Reduce your bet to the table minimum and now your expectation is to lose a mere $1.41. You can still take $20 in odds on your Pass Line bet. So, you have $30 riding on the wager but you can expect to lose a mere $1.41 on the total bet.
Isn’t that better? I think it is. Your total loss is cut in half yet you stand to win a higher percentage of your bets. Those odds bets pay out the true odds amount. Remember that.
If you have odds on the 4 or 10 of, let us say, $20 you stand to win $40 on the winning bet on the odds (the house has no cut on that money). Your loss on the Pass Line stays at $1.41.
Now to my mind that is the way to mix up your bets. Make some good bets that cover the small bad bets. If the house has any kind of edge on a bet we can consider that a bad bet. Take steps to reduce that situation as much as possible.
