Ivey wins ninth WSOP bracelet

11 Apr 2013

By Vin Narayanan
Phil Ivey won his ninth World Series of Poker (WSOP) bracelet Tuesday when he beat Brandon Wong heads up to win the $2,200 8-Game Mixed event at the World Series of Poker Asia Pacific (WSOP APAC).

The tournament had 81 entrants and Ivey won $51,840 for finishing in first. Wong won $32,039 for finishing in second.

Ivey is now tied with Johnny Moss for fourth on the all-time WSOP bracelet list. Johnny Chan and Doyle Brunson each have 10 bracelets. Phil Hellmuth has 13.

After beating a final table that included Daniel Negreanu, Ivey told the WSOP that his goal is keep winning bracelets and eventually pass Hellmuth on the all-time list.

"As I've gotten older, I've started to think about my place in poker history and where I'm going to stand, so it is important to me to win these bracelets," Ivey said. "I'm trying to catch Phil. It's tough, he keeps winning them, but I'm looking forward to the summer."

Last summer, Ivey reached five final tables at the WSOP in Las Vegas. But he wasn't able to close them out, and that clearly bothered him.

"The last [five] final tables I made I didn't win," Ivey told the WSOP. "I was getting very frustrated, so I was very happy to win this tournament."

Negreanu finished in fourth and won $16,366.
