Irish gamblers staying at home
DUBLIN, Ireland -- As reported by Bloomberg: "The economic crisis is forcing the Irish to indulge less in two pastimes: drinking and gambling.
"C&C Group Plc, the maker of Magners Irish cider, said today sales probably slumped 13 percent in the year to Feb. 28. Paddy Power Plc, Ireland's largest bookmaker, said yesterday the average stake at its Irish stores fell 3.4 percent last year.
"...Forty betting stores have already closed across Ireland, Paddy Power said yesterday. William Hill Plc is closing 14 of its Irish outlets and in all, bookmakers will shut 250 by the end of next year, according to Igoe at Goodbody, as the economic slump combines with a doubling of betting tax to curb demand.
"'Gamblers just want to cut their cloth a little bit,' Paddy Power CEO Patrick Kennedy said yesterday. The average bet placed at his outlets has fallen to 21.45 euros, he said...."
