Ireland: Online gambling tax threatens jobs, bookmaker warns

21 May 2010

DUBLIN, Ireland -- The industry has begun murmuring on the Irish Government's plans to tax online and telephone betting, The Irish Independent reported,

Paddy Power describe the plans as a "charade" and said jobs would be threatened by them, the Irish Independent said.

The plans are rumoured to include a 1 percent levy, the report said.

Paddy Power had planned to create 350 new jobs in Dublin and complained that the Irish government appeared more concerned lining the pockets of wealthy horse owners with this legislative move, The Irish Independent report commented.

Ireland has been greatly impacted by thousands of general job losses during the recent economic recession.
