Inside Gaming: Tower Marketing Team Aims high

17 Feb 2003

LAS VEGAS -- Nothing says Las Vegas like the Stratosphere. And plans are afoot to lift its visitor visibility to match its domination of the local skyline. Chief Executive Officer Richard Brown has rounded out his marketing team with Michael Martinez as senior vice president. He joined David Krause, the new Stratosphere marketing director, who had been marketing director at Sunset Station.

Martinez, formerly a senior marketing executive with Harrah's Entertainment, had been vice president of marketing for Wagerworks, a developer of online casino software for the regulated markets.

The market ing staff he heads and other managers at the Stratosphere recently were feted for excellence in customer service and recognized with the Carl Icahn Gaming Awards of Excellence by the billionaire himself.

Martinez succeeded Chuck Davison, previously vice president of marketing, who left the company at the beginning of the year to pursue professional and business options, including spending time with his new daughter. Industry interest seems substantial in his well-honed talents from 2 1/2 years at the Stratosphere and nine years at Mirage Resorts.

Word on the Strip is that a number of the larger casinos are getting together with Culinary Local 226 to launch a grass-roots campaign supporting a broad-based business tax. Organizers are divorcing themselves from the Chamber of Commerce's position opposing the governor's gross-receipts tax proposal. There is still some disagreement on whether to support the governor's plan with a petition drive, but casino operators say the effort promises to be "substantial."

The gaming industry seems to be hunkering down for a wartime economy. The Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority is organizing an emergency conference call Thursday with major operators. The action plan is the same as that used in the wake of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks and is designed to coordinate the authority's marketing efforts with those of individual properties. Insiders say the plan also includes advertising alternatives to minimize the local economic impact of a war with Iraq.

Some Culinary Local 226 members say they're concerned seniority rules are being violated in the hiring for new amenities at Caesars Palace, especially the new casual dining area near the Colosseum and the Bradley Ogden restaurant. The Culinary says the issues have yet to be resolved, but added that discussions continue. Park Place says it is working closely with the union to resolve the issues.
