India: Gambling industry advocate for govt to legalize sports betting

NEW DELHI, India -- The Indian government is being urged by the gaming industry to legalize sports betting in an effort to combat match-fixing, The Times of India reported.The gaming industry advocates outlined the benefits of legalization in a debate yesterday, the report said.
The main advantage is that site owners will not want matches fixed and will work closely with security forces to mitigate against it, according to the Times of India report.
Legalized, regulated sports betting would also bring tax revenue to the government, the report noted.
