Illinois Residents Join Postcard Protest
ILLINOIS – As reported by the Chicago Tribune: "After their bid for the state's last casino license was rejected, Waukegan officials say more than 4,000 residents have joined a postcard protest against the Illinois Gaming Board's decision.
"Prepaid postcards urging Gov. Rod Blagojevich to block the selection were recently distributed throughout City Hall and in local newspapers for residents to mail to the governor's office.
"As of Wednesday, more than 4,000 had been mailed to a post office box set up by Waukegan's casino partner, Harrah's Entertainment of Las Vegas. The protest effort ends next week.
"… Mayor Richard Hyde said he wouldn't bet the Gaming Board would overturn its March 15 decision to award the 10th casino license to Rosemont and its gaming partner, Isle of Capri Casinos Inc., of Biloxi, Miss. But he said the city's protest could help if the state decides to issue two more casino licenses, as some state lawmakers plan to propose.
"… Waukegan was the high bidder for the license with Harrah's offer of $520 million…"
