Heard it on the River

23 Apr 2004

By Rudi Schiffer
GOV. HALEY BARBOUR is known, we have heard, to have three positions on the state's gaming…no gaming expansion beyond the present counties, no lottery and no raising of gaming taxes. Sounds good to me and I think the industry will take comfort on those issues. Speaking of lotteries, don't hear much from folks who were happy to tell me that the TENNESSEE LOTTERY would put Tunica's Casinos out of business. I like the slot win percentage a lot more than my chances of winning anything worthwhile from a lottery ticket. On the other hand, lottery lovers will send my grandkids to college, a comp if you will.

THERE IS NO OTHER TUNICA…Don't misunderstand GRAND CASINO'S current advertising campaign (Discover The Other Tunica) that is so prominent right now. It is just a marketing position to differentiate Grand from its competitors and not to distance or separate itself from Tunica the county, the city. Grand is proud of being a prominent member of the Tunica community and its success is tied to Tunica and vice versa.

Just a reminder if you've not made plans to attend the SOUTHERN GAMING SUMMIT, the annual industry clambake in BILOXI May 5-6. JACKPOT will be in booth #232, listed as MORRIS SPECIALTY PUBLICATIONS, so stop by and say hello. Working out of the same booth will be MISSISSIPPI GAMING NEWS, all the more reason to visit us.

GOLDSTRIKE'S $100,000 Blackjack Tournament is set for May 14-15 with a $50,000 first place prize. Call 1-877-245-8477 to enter. In August Goldstrike is holding its $100,000 MISSISSIPPI CRAPS CHAMPIONSHIP and in September it comes with a $100,000 slot tournament. BALLY'S $150,000 ULTLMATE BLACKJACK TOURNAMENT was won by CHARLES JOHNSON of O'Fallon, MO. He took home $60,000.

HARRAH'S is seeking applications from non-profit organizations nationwide interested in receiving automated public-access defibrillators at no cost. Working with California-based CARDIAC SCIENCE, a leading manufacturer of the life-saving devices, GM PETE BONNER says Harrah's will give first consideration to organizations assisting senior citizens in the 19 Metro areas where the company operates. Applications are due May 15 and can be submitted online at www.aed.com.

The WORLD POKER TOUR televised the finals of the JACK BINION WORLD POKER OPEN on April 21 and if you caught it, it was a great show and a better commercial for TUNICA RESORTS. Maybe I need new glasses but it seemed to me the camera that was supposedly focused on the flop cards was out of focus. They said some 5 million caught the show.

THIS 'N THAT…The PEARL RIVER RUN bike rally takes place May 21-23 and every Saturday until then the Choctaw resort will give away either a Harley-Davidson motorcycle or $10,000 cash…MOTHER'S DAY Brunch at HOLLYWOOD on May 9 in fabulous FAIRBANKS Steakhouse…KEES EDER now the newVP of Resort Operations at Hollywood….CHARLES 'CHAZ' FOWLER back in Tunica as Director of Marketing at Bally's after a sojourn at Caesars Entertainment on the Gulf Coast…SUN HERALD reports that the Chairman of the House Gaming Committee, BOBBY MOAK, said he expects Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College and Pearl River Community College will offer courses in casino and resort management…HARRAH'S said prospects for opening a fourth hotel-casino in Vegas using the Horseshoe brand looks good…
