Harrah's Proposes Rhode Island Resort
WEST WARWICK, Rhode Island – As reported by the Providence Journal: "Promising thousands of new jobs and millions in new state revenue, the Narragansett Indian Tribe and its financial backer, Harrah's Entertainment, yesterday announced plans for building a $500-million resort casino here.
"If authorized by the state, the casino would employ 3,200 people, create another 3,500 spinoff jobs, and generate more than $100 million per year for state government, Harrah's said.
"…Matthew Thomas, the Narragansett tribe's chief sachem, said the casino would bring jobs and money for education and social services for his people. The tribe has been seeking to build a casino since 1993, and in West Warwick since 1998, with a succession of financial backers
"…West Warwick would get a payment in lieu of property taxes from Harrah's; the amount has yet to be negotiated. The Town Council supports the casino bid, and council President Jeanne-Marie DiMasi emceed yesterday's conference…"
