WEST WARWICK, Rhode Island – As reported by the Providence Journal: "Harrah's Entertainment recently committed $25,000 to pay the town's casino negotiator, signaling interest in renewing discussions of a proposed host-community agreement despite apparent setbacks in promoting its casino bill in the legislature.

"The payment, posted in the town's account at Citizens Bank on May 27, is the first money Harrah's has provided since February 2004.

"Negotiations over the host agreement broke off last year after the state Supreme Court declared unconstitutional a bill setting a statewide referendum on the casino plan last fall. Harrah's immediately ended financing and support for municipal studies related to the impact of the proposed casino.

"But the town has moved recently to prepare for renewed negotiations. The Town Council, in a closed-door meeting on May 11, agreed to reopen internal discussions of the casino. Thirteen days later, the council voted to replace its casino negotiator, William A. Poore, of the law firm Poore & Rosenbaum, with John Lynch Jr., of Lynch & Friel.

"The council will meet with Lynch tomorrow at 7 p.m. to plot strategy for the coming negotiations…"
