Harrah's offers plan for Kansas

24 Oct 2007

KANSAS -- Harrah's Entertainment announced Tuesday a partnership with Kansas-based developers for a proposed casino in Sumner County, Kan.

Sumner Gaming and Resorts said it would submit a casino plan to the Sumner County Commission for a project located near Wellington, Kan.

Details of the proposal weren't released, but Charles Atwood, Harrah's vice chairman, said in a statement the company would propose a "large-scale Las Vegas-style resort" reflecting the "natural beauty and hospitality that is very much a part of the charm and appeal of Kansas."

The proposal is the first to be announced for Sumner County, which is allowed to have one casino under an expanded gambling law enacted by the Kansas lawmakers this year. .

The Legislature this year opened the state to casino development by passing a bill allowing a casino in four separate zones of Kansas.

A special state committee will decide which casino proposals will be built, but the county commission must endorse it first.

Harrah's joins Las Vegas-based companies Las Vegas Sands Corp., Pinnacle Entertainment, Olympia Gaming and Golden Gaming in pursuing the new casino opportunities in Kansas.
