Harrah's Gives Up on Massachusetts
MASSACHUSETTS – As reported by the Boston Herald: "The head of one of the nation's largest casino companies says he has given up for the time being on efforts to open the Bay State to Las Vegas style gambling.
"Gary Loveman, chief executive of Harrah's Entertainment Inc., says he has written the Bay State off through at least 2004 and is refocusing lobbying efforts on Rhode Island, where voters may get a chance to approve a casino in a referendum nest fall. Harrah's has teamed up with the Narragansett Indian Tribe on a plan for a $500 million casino and resort complex in the Ocean State.
"Meanwhile, the gaming chief said he is also weighing a bid for Rhode Island's troubled Lincoln Park racetrack, whose top executives are facing federal bribery charges.
" Harrah's aggressive Rhode Island push comes as the company dramatically scales back on its lobbying efforts in the Bay State. he still believes that long term, casino gaming is in the cards for Massachusetts.
