Harrah's Exec Optimistic About Rhode Island Plans
RHODE ISLAND – As reported by the Boston Herald: "Las Vegas casino titan Gary Loveman sounded an upbeat note yesterday on his drive to build a giant Rhode Island casino, even as political clouds gather over the once-bright project.
"Loveman, chief executive of Harrah's Entertainment Inc., argued his company's plans to build a $600 million casino with the Narragansett Tribe will survive a legal torpedo launched by Gov. Donald Carcieri, a Republican.
"Carcieri, recently joined by Attorney General Patrick Lynch, a Democrat, has challenged the legality of a vote by Rhode Island lawmakers to put a gambling referendum on the fall ballot.
"Loveman said Carcieri's efforts are legally offbase. And if it comes to a vote, Loveman said Harrah's polls show, the odds favor a casino.
"…Despite Loveman's optimism, others see a long road ahead for Harrah's in trying to develop a giant casino in West Warwick…"
