Harrah's celebrates Earth Day

23 Apr 2008

LAS VEGAS, Nevada -- (PRESS RELEASE) -- Harrah's Entertainment celebrates Earth Day with company-wide efforts to protect the environment and preserve natural resources. Following on the heels of the company joining U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's Climate Leaders, Harrah's celebrates the company's commitment to environmental sustainability.

"Across all of our 40 domestic properties we have implemented unique solutions to help protect the environment," said Gary Loveman, chairman, CEO and president of Harrah's Entertainment. "Our Code of Commitment, the casino entertainment industry's preeminent declaration of corporate social responsibility, includes our commitment to the environment; as this is the right thing to do for our communities. I am very proud of our team members who have implemented a compelling, comprehensive set of Green programs."

From coast-to-coast properties in the Harrah's Entertainment portfolio are committed to environmental sustainability. In the past four years, 74 "green" projects at Harrah's casino properties across the U.S. have substantially reduced energy usage while cutting annual resource expenditures by over $10 million. Each year, the programs Harrah's has already implemented are saving 155.7 million pounds of carbon dioxide emissions, the equivalent 164,443 barrels of oil. A few highlights include:

-- 150-200 tons of waste per month is diverted from landfills through an extensive Tunica, Mississippi, recycling program launched in December.

-- Used kitchen grease fuels the two diesel utility vehicles and heats the maintenance building in Hammond, Indiana.

-- Atlantic City installed a backpressure steam turbine to generate electricity as a by-product of the normal steam production at the Showboat facility. The steam turbine reflects an annual savings of 2,283,041(kWh) and avoided emissions of 1,077,685lbs of CO2, 1,377lbs of SO2, and 535lbs of NOx.

-- The Rio Hotel is home to the nation's cleanest burning, natural gas co-generation facility.

-- In several properties, including: Paris Las Vegas, Rio Las Vegas, Showboat Atlantic City, heat recovery units are used to capture waste heat and use it to heat water for guest and kitchen use.

-- Throughout all properties, literally thousands of miles of light bulbs were changed out to either compact fluorescents or LED lights. Saving more than 50 million kWh/year and over $5 million/year.
