Gretzky Focused on Turin, Rebuffs Scandal Queries

TORINO, Italy -- As reported by CTV: "Wayne Gretzky repeated Monday that he had nothing to do with the NHL gambling scandal linked to his assistant coach Rick Tocchet and his wife, Janet Jones.

"'I'm not involved, and it's been a hard week for my family and the only focus I have right now is the hockey team and getting ready for the Olympic Games,' said a weary Gretzky as he faced reporters after Team Canada's practice in Mississauga, Ont.

"'The focus should be on these athletes who have worked their lives to be in the Olympic Games,' said Gretzky, the executive director of Canada's Olympic hockey team and coach for the Phoenix Coyotes.

"He said the scandal won't be a distraction for Team Canada in Turin, and that athletes at the Games are 'pretty isolated' anyway.

"...Gretzky's attorney, Ron Fujikawa, said earlier reports that Gretzky had spoken to Tocchet prior to Monday are 'completely ludicrous.'

"...Last Tuesday, New Jersey authorities announced charges against Tocchet, a New Jersey state trooper and another New Jersey man for running a nationwide sports gambling operation..."
