Golf Betting Column: What The Golfinggods Say….

23 Jan 2006

By Jason West

We may be only four weeks into the new season but it seems that a clear indication of things to come has emerged, especially in the form of Chad Campbell in the US and Henrik Stenson in Europe.

We all knew Chad Campbell had class but since his victory in the Tour Championship in 2003 his game, and in particular his driving has fallen away. But his game appears to be back and with the putter working nicely he has the game to compete for majors. For those of you who have not heard of Henrik Stenson then put him in your 'one to follow' list. The Swede is fast becoming a world-class player. His ball striking is as good as anyone's and when he learns to close out tournaments he will become a superstar. Don't say I did not warn you!

A mention must go to Chris DiMarco for his victory in Abu Dhabi. He has become a 'nearly man' recently with many chances to win tournaments going astray. However his performance last week must give him heart for the year ahead. Lets hope the 'claw' keeps working for him.

The US tour moves to Torrey Pines, California, for the Buick Invitational, played over the North and South courses at Torrey Pines. The two courses vary greatly with the North course considerably shorter and easier. The South course is a tough proposition as it has been lengthened and toughened in preparation for the 2008 US Open. One round is played on the North course and the remaining three rounds are played on the South course. Hitting fairways and greens this week is a must.

Selections:

Sergio Garcia: if he had any putting stroke at all last week he would have won easily on the European tour. His ball striking is superb at the moment and if the putts start to drop he must go close.

Bernhard Langer: the veteran has half an eye on the Ryder Cup this year so expect him to play well. His record around these courses is very good and he thrives on a tough test. Could go well at a big price.

Stewart Cink: this year will be a big year for Cink as he is likely to be forgotten by the golfing world is he does not start to perform at a level he is capable. I have read he has worked hard on his game in the off-season and this tournament suits his game. Good each way chance.

Others to mention: Jose Maria Olazabal, K.J Choi and Vaughan Taylor.

The European tour stays in the desert with the Qatar Masters being played at the Dohar golf course. This facility real is an oasis in the desert with some of the finest clubhouse and practise facilities in the world. The course is not overly long at 7,100 yards however the greens are very large, grainy with a number of severe slopes. Perhaps the biggest test for the golfers this week will not be the golf course but the ever-present winds or Shamal, as it is known locally. This wind can quite easily create a sand storm and cause a number of problems for the golfers.

Selections:

Ernie Els: obvious chance as the defending champion and has been in good form since returning from a knee injury. Good chance to win his first start of the season.

Ian Poulter: showed signs last week that his game is coming back to form. A streaky player at times he can destroy a field if in the mood. If that mood is with him this week he may just win. A good each way option.

Henrik Stenson: an outstanding ball striker and runner up here last year. In good form already this year and he must go very close.

Others to mention: Darren Clarke, Nick Dougherty & Stephen Dodd.

Until next week – May The Golfinggods Be With You!
