Golden Riviera Casino makes donation to AIDS charity

MALTA -- (PRESS RELEASE) -- In honour of World AIDS Day 2010, casino online operators Golden Riviera Casino have donated a total of $20,000.00 to Nkosi's Haven, an AIDS charity organization based in South Africa, thanks to a month-long donation drive hosted by the casino during the month of November. GoldenRivieraCasino.com managed to raise $18,493.17 in funds for the cause during the month of November, and has decided to round off that figure to $20,000.00 as an act of goodwill and generosity for the cause.

Established in 1999 in memory of Nkosi Johnson, Nkosi's Haven is a non-profit charity organization based in South Africa which offers shelter, food, security, education, therapy and much-needed medical care to children orphaned by HIV/AIDS as well as HIV positive mothers from disadvantaged economic conditions. Nkosi's Haven provides two care and shelter facilities in the South African province of Gauteng, mainly in Johannesburg and Vereeniging, the latter being a self-sustaining farm. Nkosi's Haven is currently home to a total of 41 mothers and 149 children. 34 of these 139 orphans are HIV positive and, while most of these children contracted the virus during childbirth, some have been infected as a result of sexual abuse.

According to a 2006 UN report, there were an estimated 11 million AIDS orphans living in Sub-Saharan Africa, Today these numbers have soared to over 14 million, contributing to the ever-growing incidence of child-headed households in these largely economically depressed, third-world communities living in Sub-Saharan Africa. According to Wikipedia, the region of southern Africa has the highest rate of AIDS infection in the world, with South Africa alone reporting 12% of its over 40 million population as being HIV positive.
