FanDuel reaches partnership with Philly.com

7 Apr 2010

(PRESS RELEASE) -- The Philadelphia Inquirer is the third oldest newspaper in the US, and it's online publication, Philly.com is proving to be a true pioneer by becoming the first online news publication to use the power of daily fantasy sports games to open up a new revenue frontier. With the much publicized downturn in advertising revenues, could these games, at least in part, save the newspaper industry?

Following the model of UK newspapers, who generate millions of dollars in online revenue1 from betting and paid games, Philly.com has just partnered with FanDuel.com to launch an online fantasy sports game where players play and win in a day - using real money.

Touted as "one-night stand" fantasy sports, the game is a white-labelled version of FanDuel.com, which first launched its standalone game in July last year and is seen by many as the future of fantasy sports – who wants to wait the entire baseball or football season to win their matchups when they can prove their prowess in one night, right?

Thanks to the fantasy sports carve out in the 2006 Unlawful Internet Gaming Enforcement Act, these instant fantasy games are legal in the US – something that the FanDuel team has been very careful to adhere to. FanDuel and its partners generate revenue from taking a commission on each game.

With some players winning over $16,000 in one month alone, and over 27 million2 of us playing fantasy sports each year, this baseball season should be a real money-spinner for Philly.com and FanDuel's other partners.

FanDuel has been developed by Hubdub Ltd, the Edinburgh and San Francisco based games development company. Founded in November 2007, Hubdub Ltd launched it's first free game, Hubdub.com, in 2008 and received venture funding in early 2009.
