Experts: Courts Will Take Buffalo Lawsuit Seriously

WASHINGTON, DC – As reported by the Buffalo News: "Two key former members of Congress are siding with casino opponents who sued the federal government last week in hopes of preventing the Seneca Nation from opening a gambling hall in downtown Buffalo.

"The support of these two former legislators is just one reason why many legal experts say the federal courts will have to take the case seriously.

"Retired Rep. Amo Houghton author of a 1990 law that settled leases on Seneca-owned land in Salamanca said the legislation was not intended to allow the Senecas to build off-reservation casinos.

"Former Rep. John J. LaFalce, a co-sponsor of that law, agreed with Houghton. Their opinion echoes the argument that casino opponents make in the lawsuit.

"…This is not a frivolous case,' said Robert T. Coulter, executive director of the Indian Law Resource Center, a nonprofit law firm. 'But it isn't clear that it's going to be successful.'…"
