Double odds confusion

Dear Frank:

I've just returned to snowy Wisconsin from Las Vegas.

I was playing craps at Slots-O-Fun, betting $5 on the pass line and all come bets with double odds. I don't normally play at a casino that limits me to double odds, so I was surprised when I tried to give the dealer $12 odds for the 5 and 9, and he refused. I know that on these come numbers of 5 and 9 the odds bet pays $3 for $2. I was restricted to a $6 odds bet. Was the dealer correct? Do casinos really consider $12 odds on a $5 come bet to be more than double odds?

Dear Jeff:

A $5 pass line or come bet at a double-odds game should allow a $10 odds bet, not a $6 odds bet, and, maybe, generous casinos might allow a $12 odds bet - but unfortunately those will be few and far between. It seems to me Slots-O-Fun should rename itself Slots No Fun if this is its policy. The odds bet is a break-even bet, and the house will break even on the bet over time.
