Dog, horse owners push for slots

27 Jul 2007

VALLEY CENTER, Kansas -- As reported by the Wichita Eagle: "Dog and horse owners said slot machines could revive the struggling animal racing industry in Kansas and prevent local money from flowing into Oklahoma during a rally at the dog track here Thursday afternoon.

"'You've got to go where the money's at,' said Renee Jones. 'That means we're spending Kansas money in Oklahoma.'

"Like about 100 other people, Jones mingled in front of the Wichita Greyhound Park where horse and dog trailers held pro-gambling banners and people scarfed down free hot dogs and pop.

"Jones lives in Eureka, but she said Sedgwick County's vote will have a major impact on her family because her husband trains race horses.

"Under the new state law, the purses that animal owners win when their animals win could increase significantly.

"While at least 87 percent of the money gamblers push into slot machines would come back as winnings, 7 percent of the remaining money would increase the purses horse owners can win.

"...Altogether, the slot machines could generate an additional $15 million to $17 million for the dog and horse racing industries, according to an estimate by the Kansas Racing and Gaming Commission..."
