Digesting the Casinomeister Awards

25 Jan 2010

We all appreciate what Bryan Bailey and the folks at Casinomeister do (including Bailey's trusty Robot, Vortan). His forum, the advice, the PAB section – they actually make casinos and gambling online better and safer, so when Casinomeister dish out their yearly awards to operators we all (should) stand up and take notice. The 2009 accolades are out now but what do this year's awards mean? Who are the real winners and losers and, more importantly, does the good message reach the most important people – the players?

Let's deal with the latter first. It can be argued that Casinomeister is made up of players, and in which case the answer is an immediate "yes", but these boys and girls are the hardcore. What they don't know about casinos isn't worth knowing. They probably have accounts at operators from all the casino software manufacturers out there (and why not!), and know what they can expect from each. But does Casinomeister really have an impact on the multitude Googling "online casino" or see a TV advert and type in the casino's URL? Probably not.

"So, are they valuable?" you ask. I'd have to say a big, overwhelming yes. As an awarding body they don't get bigger and more important in this industry. These badges come on the back of real feedback – good or bad – from the forum, made up of real players and real responses from casinos, and should be worn with pride. 32Red, Brightshare and 3Dice, for example, know this and have in many cases used the awards to form the backbone of recruiting players and affiliates respectively. In effect, the message does in fact get across and more new players get a quality casino experience. So when Casinomeister says "this is bad", we should listen. When he says, in his indefatigable and unique way, "this is good" then join, play and have fun, because you're going to enjoy a safe, fun online casino.

So, who are the winners this year? Well, the awards saw the introduction of the ambiguously titled "Casino of the Decade". 32Red are the recipients, and on the back of six Best Casino wins in a row this online casino probably more than deserve the title. ClubWorld/ClubUSA now hold the Best Casino award, having finally prised the long-standing incumbents, 32Red, from the mantle. However, is being USA friendly alone enough to justify the award?.. I would be tempted to say no if it wasn't for the fact that 1. Casinomeister says so and 2. Being a player at ClubWorld I've seen firsthand how great their service is.

As always, and always worth a read, are the Casinomeister anti-awards. Rightly scathing, consistently side-splittingly funny, some of this year's wooden spoons include gems such as Worst Blundering Screw up, Sitting on One's Hands and The Evil Player Award. I won't go into details but suggest you take a read for yourself, whether you're a player, an affiliate or simply just want a laugh.
