Did I switch machines one spin too soon?

23 Aug 2010

By John Robison

My question relates to a bank of machines that are tied together. If I'm playing a machine and switch, and after a few minutes someone sits down and hits a good payout on that machine with one spin, did I just quit one spin too soon or is it more random?

Thanks,
Truman

Dear Truman,

It's more random. The random number generator (RNG) in the software running the machine is constantly generating new outcomes. For you to have hit the good payout on the first machine, you would have had to have hit the Spin button at the exact same instant that the other player hit it.

It wasn't the case that next spin was going to have a good payout. It was the case that the value of the RNG corresponded to a combination with a good payout at the instant the other player hit the Spin button.

Best of luck in and out of the casinos,
John
