DOVER, Delaware -- As reported by the Delaware News Journal: "Even though Maryland lawmakers have given Free State voters the right to allow slot machine casinos a year from now, Delaware gambling interests aren't pushing the panic button.

"And with ballot opposition already gearing up across the state line, some say Gov. Martin O'Malley's plan has an uphill climb.

"...Since 2004, 10 states have gone to voters to expand gaming, usually by adding slots of some type to existing lotteries, and all the issues have failed, said Tom Grey, the field coordinator and spokesman for the National Coalition Against Legalized Gambling.

"...Still, Maryland's push to authorize slots is closer to reality than it has been at almost any time -- and that's a concern in Delaware.

"...Delaware has long been concerned about Maryland getting slots because of the effect it would have on the state's gaming industry. Slots make up the bulk of Delaware's lottery income, which totaled $256.7 million during the state's last budget year. It is the state's fourth-biggest single source of money.

"According to a 2003 study, Deputy Finance Secretary Tom Cook said Maryland slots could siphon enough business from First State racinos to cost the state $85 million a year..."
