Community 'wants Good Friday gambling'

AUSTRALIA -- As reported by ABC News: "Tabcorp has hit back at outrage over its decision to open for gambling on Good Friday for the first time, saying it is responding to changing community standards.

"The company is encouraging race clubs to hold meetings on Good Friday, when it will allow punters to place bets at its TAB agencies and hotels across the country.

"Tabcorp is expecting to make several million dollars from bets on the day's two NRL matches, as well as horse races to be run in Singapore and South Africa.

"It also wants holidaying punters to bet early on Sydney's Doncaster Day horse racing event, which will be held on Easter Saturday.

"Tabcorp has announced the decision as New South Wales authorities consider applications from 80 retailers, including Myer, David Jones and Kmart, to open on Easter Sunday.

"Religious, charity and anti-gambling groups are furious at the plans, saying the sacred holidays need to be protected..."
