Circus Circus Withdraws N.J. License Application

ATLANTIC CITY, New Jersey -- As reported by the Press of Atlantic City: "It was a company that had a frivolous name, but Circus Circus wasn't clowning around with its plans for a gigantic casino in Atlantic City's Marina District.

"On Dec. 10, 1997, Las Vegas-based Circus Circus Enterprises Inc. submitted its application and the requisite $100,000 fee for a New Jersey gaming license as it prepared to build a 2,000-room casino hotel boasting a $600 million pricetag.

"But following a legal fight with development partner Mirage Resorts Inc., Circus Circus killed its project in 1998. Interestingly, its license application remained on file at the state Casino Control Commission for seven more years.

"Finally, with no fanfare or formal announcements, the New Jersey subsidiary of Circus Circus withdrew the application on Nov. 2. However, it's not getting the hundred grand back. The application fee is nonrefundable

"...Circus Circus Enterprises no longer exists as a corporation. It changed its name to Mandalay Resort Group in 1999... Mandalay Resort Group was acquired this year by MGM Mirage..."
