Churchill Downs offers replicas of Pat Day statue

30 Oct 2006

LOUISVILLE, Kentucky -- (PRESS RELEASE) -- Churchill Downs is offering for sale limited-edition replica statues of the bronze sculpture of Hall of Fame jockey Pat Day, which was formally unveiled and dedicated today in Churchill Downs' paddock garden, next to the statue of the very first Kentucky Derby winner, Aristides. Net proceeds from the sale of the limited-edition replica statues will go to the Racetrack Chaplaincy of America program, in which Day actively participates.

Only 15 replica statues, smaller versions of the life-sized bronze statue of Day created by Louisville sculptor Raymond Graf, will be available for purchase through Churchill Downs or through a special online auction. Each replica statue stands 16 inches tall and comes with a signed letter of authenticity from Pat Day and the artist.

Race fans and collectors of sports memorabilia can pre-purchase replica statues through Churchill Downs prior to Breeders' Cup Day on Saturday, Nov. 4. The remaining inventory will be offered for sale on Nov. 4 to guests attending the Breeders' Cup World Championships in Churchill Downs' Finish Line Suites, Jockey Club Suites, Turf Club and Millionaires' Row dining areas. The price per replica statue is $3,000 with net proceeds going to the nonprofit Racetrack Chaplaincy of America program. Individuals wishing to pre-purchase replica statues should contact Jessica Pollio at Churchill Downs at (502) 636-4544.

Also, beginning today at noon EST, the very first replica statue in the series (No. 1) will be offered for sale through the online auction site eBay with a starting bid of $3,000. To participate in the online eBay auction, visit www.ebay.com and search for the name "Pat Day" in the "Art" category.

Raymond Graf, who has created sculptures of sports heroes Pee Wee Reese and Paul Hornung along with other business and community leaders that are now on display through the City of Louisville, was commissioned by Churchill Downs to create the sculpture following Day's retirement from riding in 2005. Graf's bronze captures the image of Day raising his eyes and hands toward the sky as he gave thanks to God following his victory in the 1992 Kentucky Derby aboard W.C. Partee's Lil E. Tee. That victory proved to be Day's only Kentucky Derby win in 22 attempts.

Day completed his riding career with a record 2,481 victories at Churchill Downs, making him the track's all-time winning rider. Day is second only to Laffit Pincay Jr. in terms of North American victories with 8,803 career wins. Day's mounts earned $297,912,019. He led American jockeys in victories six times and earned four Eclipse Awards that honored him as the nation's top rider.
