Casino City's Friday Five: Jackpots, sports betting and iGaming in Canada edition

4 Feb 2022

With Super Bowl LVI just over a week away, the U.S. sports betting market continues to flourish.

This week, we had two sportsbooks officially open, just in time for one of the biggest sports betting events of the year. In addition, we also have a historic sports wager placed on the Super Bowl, several jackpot winners, a new rewards program for MGM Resorts players and new about the launch of a huge iGaming market in Canada.

Let’s begin with lofty Super Bowl wager:

5. $4.5 million Super Bowl wagers
Mattress Mack placed the single-largest legal mobile sports wager of all time at Caesars Sportsbook. Mack plunked down bets totaling $4,534,000 on the Cincinnati Bengals moneyline (+170) against the Los Angeles Rams in Super Bowl LVI.

Jim “Mattress Mack” McIngvale is the owner of Gallery Furniture which he built up to be one of the biggest retail chains in the country. Mattress Mack has placed several large wagers on major sporting events in the past. If the Bengals pull off the upset, Mack wins $7,707,800.

The $4.5 million in bets is the second-biggest legal Super Bowl total wager ever placed, only trailing a $4.9 million bet at -900 odds during the 2002 Super Bowl.

4. Seminole Hard Rock Hollywood awards massive jackpot
On 28 January, a Florida resident visited Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Hollywood and won a $1,331,540 jackpot while playing Aristocrat Gaming's Dragon Link progressive slot game with a $250 bet.

This is the fourth $1 million jackpot to hit on the Dragon Link slot game at a Seminole Gaming property in less than 60 days.

Just a few days later, a player took home a six-figure jackpot from the Las Vegas Strip.

There was a jackpot on Blazing 7 Diamonds at Planet Hollywood Las Vegas for $111,801 on 31 January. The Caesars Rewards member plans to use the winnings to pay bills and help her father with medical expenses.

3. BetMGM Sportsbook opens at Nationals Park
On Monday, BetMGM and the Washington Nationals announced the opening of the first retail sportsbook connected to a Major League Baseball stadium.

The new sportsbook in DC features 40 big-screen TVs with live odds boards. Visitors can place wagers directly with cashiers at six betting windows or utilize betting kiosks. Additionally, the BetMGM Sportsbook offers full-service beverage and dining options.

It will not be accessible inside the park during baseball games, but fans will be able to place bets via BetMGM's mobile app.

A day later in the Pacific Northwest, Little Creek Casino Resort in Washington opened a new sportsbook.

The venue is located on the main casino floor and offers 30 luxury lounge seats, eight 82-inch screens and a 20x10 foot LED video wall to deliver a digital display with eight betting kiosks.

2. MGM Resorts launches new rewards program
On 1 February, MGM Resorts launched MGM Rewards, its new loyalty rewards program, offering enhanced benefits and new ways to earn for its millions of members worldwide.

Non-gaming members will join their gaming counterparts and earn MGM Rewards Points redeemable for complimentary dining, entertainment, hotel stays and more.

For a limited time, all members benefit from a 2x multiplier on Tier Credits earned at the company's Las Vegas resorts from 1 February to 30 April.

The launch of MGM Rewards also comes with a new streamlined app that makes it simple for members to review their tier status and benefits and visualize how they can advance to the next tier.

"The enhancements we've introduced with MGM Rewards are rooted in feedback shared by our members and allow us to invest in providing members progressively more valuable benefits at each tier. Our unique rewards offer significant incentives for guests to achieve at every level from Sapphire to NOIR," said Anil Mansukhani, MGM Resorts' Vice President of Loyalty Marketing.

1. Ontario’s iGaming market to launch on 4 April
iGaming Ontario, a subsidiary of the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario, is working with the Government of Ontario and the AGCO to establish a new online gaming market.

Beginning 4 April, private gaming operators that have registered with the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario can begin offering their games to players in Ontario.

With a population of over 14.5 million, the province has the potential to be one of the biggest iGaming markets in North America. According to Vixio Regulatory Intelligence, Ontario could generate gross revenues of C$989m in its first year of opening, and grow to C$1.86 billion by 2026.

“Consumers can be assured that companies who successfully enter the new Ontario market will have met rigorous standards of game and operator integrity, fairness, player protections and social responsibility, allowing all players to play with confidence,” says Martha Otton, iGO Executive Director.

“Today, most internet gaming by Ontarians takes place on websites not conducted and managed by the province,” states Otton. “Our new internet gaming market will give consumers enhanced entertainment choice, support the growth of a new, legal market and generate revenue that can help fund programs and services that benefit all of us.”
