Casino City’s Friday Five: Donating to the cause edition

10 Apr 2020

By Dan Ippolito
As we approach the middle of April, we are continuing to see more casinos extend their temporary closures until the end of the month. With gambling at land-based casinos out of the question for the time being, there are plenty of reasons to play online games and we will get into some of poker pro Tadas Peckaitis’ motives shortly. Also this week, we have Easter poker tournaments at Intertops, a massive jackpot at an online casino, projections for Colorado sports betting and a major donation from Las Vegas Sands. Let’s start this week off with some good news with a jackpot: 5. €10.7 million Mega Moolah jackpot On 5 April, Microgaming’s Mega Moolah progressive jackpot slot paid out a whopping €10,735,716.84 prize at JackpotCity Casino. The eight-figure jackpot is due to be paid to the player in a lump sum. Microgaming’s progressive jackpot network has paid out over €1.1 billion in prizes to date, including more than €26 million this year, with over 150 players taking home €10,000 or more. 4. Easter Poker Tournament at Intertops Poker Intertops Poker is running five special tournaments over the Easter weekend, with $10, $15 or $20 buy-ins and prize pools of up to $2,000. The Easter Experience poker tournament series started with a freeroll yesterday and continues with a $2,000 GTD re-entry tournament, a $1,500 GTD Omaha tournament and a $1,000 GTD R&A Big Batch. It wraps up Monday with a $1,000 GTD Bounty Tournament. “Our tables have been busier than ever lately. All kinds of players from all over the world,” said the poker manager. “From freeroll to bounty, a little Omaha and a re-entry tournament -- we planned this holiday series so there’s something for everyone.” Also on the schedule this weekend is the weekly Sunday’s Sundowner Tournament where the prize pool will be $10,000. Players can win their way to the Final Table Sunday, 12 April in $1 satellites held several times daily until Sunday. 3. Colorado sports betting could generate $6 billion Despite the COVID-19 pandemic and lack of sporting events on the calendar, Colorado regulators are still preparing for a 1 May launch of online and retail sports betting. When it does, Colorado will become the 18th U.S. state to have some form of legal sports betting. The state’s sports betting industry will eventually generate billions of dollars in bets annually, hundreds of millions in operator revenue, and tens of millions in tax revenue, according to estimates by PlayColorado.com. The Centennial State has a bright future, capable at maturity of generating as much as $6 billion in sports bets annually, $400 million in gross operator revenue annually, and $40 million in annual tax revenue, according to PlayColorado projections. “With a significant base of existing land-based casinos, a regulatory framework that will be attractive to operators, and one of the largest metropolitan markets in the country to draw from, Colorado is well-positioned to capitalize on sports betting,” said Dustin Gouker, chief analyst for PlayColorado.com. There is an area of concern and that is the launch date. If it does start on 1 May, it will be tough to predict the numbers in the beginning due to these unprecedented times. 2. Las Vegas Sands donates two million surgical masks Two million surgical masks donated by Las Vegas Sands arrived in Albany, New York yesterday morning where 500 boxes, containing one million masks were unloaded for distribution to health care providers and first responders attacking the COVID-19 crisis on the front lines. After leaving New York, the 767 aircraft owned by Las Vegas Sands Chairman Sheldon G. Adelson and sent to Guangzhou, China to transport the protective gear, arrived in Las Vegas with an additional one million masks for front-line crisis response in Nevada. On top of all of the donations, the company is paying each of its nearly 10,000 Las Vegas team members, along with providing full health-care benefits, while its properties remain closed. "This pandemic has called on each of us to use every ability we have to help those most impacted by the crisis," Adelson said. 1. Top 10 reasons to choose online poker Live poker surely has plenty of benefits if its own, but if you are considering which option is better for you, poker pro Tadas Peckaitis shares his thoughts about the advantages of online poker. Of course, with the current COVID-19 pandemic, options for a live game are extremely limited with most casinos and poker rooms closed, and many people turning to online poker. One of the items that Tadas shines light on is the bigger game selection online poker has. Online poker gives players the option to play Seven Card Stud to Razz or even Five Card Draw. “Even if you are not regularly playing these games, having the ability to jump into one of it and have some fun or relax after the session is undoubtedly a benefit on its own,” wrote Peckaitis. A key advantage that online poker holds is the option for players to multi-table. Land-based casinos only allow you the capability of playing at one table at a time, however, online poker rooms and casinos will see players at more than one table. Tadas writes, “If you are playing seriously, then multi-tabling opens a lot of possibilities and lets you play in many good games at the same time without having to sacrifice the value, which once again leads to a higher $/hour.”
