California county signs deal with casino tribe

2 Aug 2007

SAN DIEGO, California -- As reported by the North County Times -- County supervisors formally approved a $38 million-plus deal with the Pala Band of Mission Indians on Wednesday, saying they hoped the tribe's agreement to help pay to improve roads, law enforcement and gambling addiction services would trigger similar deals with other tribes.

"'Tribal casinos have permanently changed our backcountry,' said Supervisor Bill Horn. 'From traffic and noise to the crime and gambling addiction, there's been significant impacts on the communities. ... I'd like to thank Pala for stepping up to the plate and agreeing to the most substantial mitigation packages we've seen from a tribe in our county.'

"...The deal between the county and the tribe, triggered by Pala's desire to expand its casino, was required by the state under an agreement signed by tribes and Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger.

"The Pala tribe intends to expand the size of its North County casino on Highway 76 by more than 42 percent, from 230,795 square feet to 328,853 square feet..."
