27 Aug 2008

DUBLIN, Ireland -- (PRESS RELEASE) -- The individual gold medal at the €20,000 added Devilfish Poker Devilympics has been won with a display of true Olympian courage by "olipizer" from the UK. The ballsy Brit won an astounding 12 of the 75 events to collect the medal and €5,000 first prize for topping the overall leader board with 170 points.

He beat off stiff competition from Canada's "igotabigpp" who received €3,000 and a silver medal for his 153 point tally and "Cammykaze," also from the UK, who came third with 138 points winning €2,000 and a bronze medal.

The games, which ran from Aug. 9 to 23, also saw Britain sweep to victory in the medal table with an overall haul of 59 medals (21 Gold, 16 Silver, and 22 Bronze). Its nearest rival was Ireland with 41 medals (18 Gold, 14 Silver, and 9 Bronze). Third place in the country standings was Canada with 30 medals (12 Gold, 7 Silver, and 11 Bronze).

The Devilympics kicked off with the highly anticipated and hotly contested €1,000 Opening Ceremony Freeroll which attracted 1,221 players from every corner of the globe. It was won by the UK's "R1TCHIE" who coupled this impressive feat with another victory in event three.

The huge turnout set the tone for the competitive nature of the poker marathon that would unfold and culminated in a record field of 1,276 in the colourful celebration of the €1,000 Closing Ceremony Freeroll. The emotionally charged event was won by "johnnybabz."

UK poker legend Dave "Devilfish" Ulliott, who played the opening and closing events with a €250 bounty on his head said, "Congratulations to all who participated and made this Devilympics truly exceptional. The Brits medal haul was more than we could have hoped for and Gold medal winner olipizer did us proud. With the games returning home to Britain in 2012, poker players have a lot to look forward to."
