"Brains Vs. Artificial Intelligence" competition to close on May 8

(PRESS RELEASE) -- The results are in. After two weeks of play, “Brains Vs. Artificial Intelligence: 80,000 Hands of No-limit Hold’em” will come to a close on Friday, May 8. Representatives from Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) and Rivers Casino will share the final results and hold a trophy presentation immediately following the close of the competition. This is the first time a computer program has played human professionals in the no-limit game. The artificial intelligence program was developed at CMU by Prof. Tuomas Sandholm and his research group.

Microsoft Research and Rivers Casino have jointly provided $100,000 in appearance fees to be split by the poker pros in this exhibition. The Pittsburgh Supercomputing Center provided computing support.

Pittsburgh City Councilman and CMU alumnus Dan Gilman, State Representative Jake Wheatley and State Senator Wayne Fontana are expected to attend and offer remarks.

There will be a media briefing at 11 a.m., Friday, May 8, followed by the trophy ceremony.

Tuomas Sandholm, professor of computer science; Andrew Moore, Dean of the School of Computer Science; Craig Clark, Rivers Casino General Manager; and professional poker players Doug Polk, Dong Kim, Bjorn Li and Jason Les will all be available for interviews.

The event will be held at Levels Lounge, main floor, Rivers Casino, 777 Casino Drive, North Shore. Please note that no one under the age of 21 is permitted on casino property.
