Betway punter wins 500/1 eSports wager
7 Dec 2016
The shrewd gaming fan backed the North American-based rank outsiders to be the outright winners of this season's ELEAGUE, a Counter-Strike: Global Offensive tournament held in Atlanta, Georgia, inflicting a pay-out on the leading online betting firm of £10,000.
The unfancied minnows from the suburban Chicago-area defied all expectations when qualifying for the 16-team global tournament, and then went onto shock Swedish legends Fnatic to finish second in group D.
Traders flagged up the possible payout when OpTic Gaming made light work of mousesports and FaZe Clan to reach the final against Danish galaticos Astralis, where they eventually prevailed 2-1 to claim the prestigious title and $400,000 in prize money.
Betway's Alan Alger said: "Through all the years of having a dedicated eSports trading team we thought we had seen it all, but this 500/1 shot has left us with egg on our faces.
"We're only too happy to pay out on what is our largest priced single eSports winner in our history, although I can confidently say we won't be underestimating OpTic Gaming at the next CS:GO event."
